    Great video , one thing I was curious about was the sump pump discharge line . Given the depth of the trench how did you end up terminating the 4 inch corrugated pipe at that depth and was there a check valve on the discharge line or did you solely rely on the slope of the trench to prevent back flow in case of freezing .

    It's not pressure that cleans the corrugated. You only get pressure with water depth. It's probably turbulence in the flow from the corrugations that gives you some cleaning action. 5" of water depth would yield only 0.18 psi. You need 100' vertical depth of water to get just 40 psi. Wont the clay clog the fabric? Scratch that, if it stops the clay, it definetly gets clogged by it. Those microscopic platelets of clay can clog anything. So, how do you cope with clogged fabric surrounding your pipe. Or are you banking on a lower percentage clay topsoil on top of the fabric to continually permit water ingress? Or does it allow enough clay through to somewhat flush itself while limiting the clay flow rate so the pipe doesn't get clogged?

    • @Josh-oh2zq
      @Josh-oh2zq 14 часов назад

      The DOT is getting away with it because they use a huge bed of sand, stone chip, and gravel and almost no water ingress from under a road. That's not a good argument for a sogggy clay residential lot.

    I’m curious about how you cover the drain in the swail where it is supposed to take water in. One solution I like is to cover the pipe and surrounding gravel with landscaping fabric to keep debris out and then cover the fabric with a decorative stone. Unfortunately not everyone likes that look. TY

      You should probably hire this done. You didn’t tell me if it was galvanized steel. You didn’t tell me if it was going to be PVC Schedule 40, or if it’s going to be dual-wall pipe. You didn’t tell me if it’s going to be concrete, which tells me you don’t know what it’s going to be. A professional will have all the tools to handle the above list. Whatever it turns out to be, he will have the equipment and the knowledge to make the tie-in.

    I was going for a 2% slope with my french drain until I realized how many roots I would have to cut. Lol. I ended up going with 1% for the first 35'. Hand digging is no joke by yourself. 16 hours later, and I still have 40' to go, but it should be a cakewalk since it's all downhill and there shouldn't be as many roots. I'm a little worried about clogging because the slope is pretty extreme, but hopefully, the cleanouts (start and end of french drain) will make things easier if the soild 50' pipe clogs.

      @@FRENCHDRAINMAN Due to building up grade from house construction from as far back as 50yrs ago, and more areas still being built up today due to construction, there's 3 separate back yards that now have depressions trapping water when we get rains ¾" or more. So their basement sump pumps always run and backyard a Swamp. My property is furthest away. I own a skidloader and mini-x. So I told my neighbor if he let's me dig a trench thru his property to street storm drain, I'll lay another pipe in trench to discharge his yard at no charge. Told him he should put french drain in backyard to discharge into pipe I'm putting in for him, but cost of that is on him. There's 2 birms I need to trench thru that are damming our properties. One is mine, and the other is his. So I'm thinking I need the solid high octane pipe to run this. In the meantime, as I plan on doing this, I'll be trying to sell them on French drains along their backyard. Don't think they'll pull any triggers though because I'm new in the neighborhood and suspect they'll want to see how I operate 1st. I took the laser level across both properties, total 260', and there's a 4' drop from my property to street by his property. If you read this, I hope you're getting a mental picture of it. So I'm thinking 260' to discharge my property to city street, and 165' to discharge from his backyard to str. When I get to neighbor's yard, I'll throw in another pipe with inlet to pickup his water in same trench.

    Can you refer me to someone in San Diego? I have some stucco bubbling out due to moisture after this super rainy winter and been meeting with different companies. Im not sure who is best qualified; a landscaper, an irrigation specialist. I had a company called Construction and Design come by and it was very pricey and he was talking about installing 18 inch wide french drains and another company E Drain said a 3 inch french drain would be fine. Such a disparity. I dont who to trust. Seems more complicated than meets the eye. Started thinking I just need rain gutters and that would be enough but Im just not sure and who is most knowledgeable because the company specializing in drains will tell you I need a drain while a rain gutter company will tell me I need a rain gutter. Who is best to fugure out a gameplan for my situation? The stucco bubbling is only in the front and back and rain gutters only go on the side of the house so Im not sure how that helps.

    Curious how much about a French drain system should run. I know it depends on how much trenching but I just got an estimate for 22K for a French drain along the back of my house (about 25 feet long) and along the side (about 75 feet) plus rain gutters plus Stucco repair with silicone. I know it's alot of work especially since the area in the back (worst part because it's downsloping right into my house) has a concrete patio so that has to be busted up before trenching but still 22K & 2 weeks to complete the job seems like ALOT and a long time to get the job done

      It's hard to say what you should be paying because every state and city has its own labor costs. Here in Michigan, that seems really expensive, even if it were all hand-dug and there were no machine access. I think you should get some more quotes. You can't hire based on price, but if you can find a guy that you really feel confident in and he's in the middle, that's what I would shoot for. Never hire the cheapest guy.
